Yellow and Gray!

Hmmm, the gray and yellow comment on the generalist’s front door conundrum reminded me of my own yellow and gray combo!!! When i was browsing a fabric store in Newport News, looking for color/fabric OPTIONS for our new place, i found a bolt of fabric (light weight cotton print) that was interesting, and the price tag was $3 a yard. When i went to pay for it and asked if this was the real price, i was told, ‘no, it’s on sale….$1.50 a yard…’, so how could i pass up 15 yards of fabric that i have no immediate use for??? It’s a yellow background with design in charcoal gray and warm taupe. I am ahead of the crowd!!
Now come the OPTIONS. I think i will use it in my office/tv/guest room/project room where i already have a black floating desk and bookshelf. i have a queen bed tucked under a slanted ceiling. Now, do i do the walls yellowish, or taupish. Do i use the fabric for bedskirt, duvet, or coverlet, or do i use it for window treatments? Maybe a gray coverlet, taupe walls, duvet w/ this fabric on one side, and something else on the back, and bedskirt out of it…do i want modern or cozy? Arghhhh…the options!!!

This Desk…or That Desk???
August 12, 2008
the generalist writes…
While living together, Former Roomie (FR) and I had a habit of sitting on the couch watching TV, laptops on our laps, scouring CraigsList and IMing each links of fabulous finds we could repaint or reupholster and proudly display…where?! Well, this habit has continued, miles away and from the comfort of our own couches, now that she has her new place (which is sososo cute, by the way).
This morning’s IM conversation revolved around her office/guest room, which is currently a holding area for to-be CraigsList-ed items or things to take to Goodwill. The color scheme in her house is really fun – gray walls, chocolate brown furniture, and teal, apple green, and yellow accents – and she wants to carry that upstairs to her bedroom and office/guest room without being too matchy-matchy or constrained to one set of colors.
[insert pillow pic] Her inspiration piece is this gorgeous white and gray ruffled pillow, so she’s thinking of continuing the gray walls to this room, but darker – like a pewter gray. I sent her a link to one of my favorite fabrics right now – one that I’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate into my house somehow – from Calico Corners, which will become her floor-to-ceiling curtains on two windows, and add that pop of yellow she wanted.
Next on the agenda: find the perfect desk to “float” in the room! Read on for our IM conversation…
FR :: i found a desk i want!!!!
Me :: OOOOH share!
FR :: well
FR :: i will show you
FR :: but you should say to me “that is too expensive. NO.”
FR :: stand by for the link…
FR :: future desk?
FR :: but in GREEEEEEEN
Me :: oooooh
Me :: greeeeeeeeeeeen
FR :: check out the inside drawer!
Me :: LOOK AT THE ORGANIZATION!!!!!!!!!! i want one!
FR :: but $500?! eek
Me :: but FR…you’re made of money, right? LOL
FR :: HA!
Me :: i loooooove it. seriously looooooove it
FR :: i think it would be perfect
Me :: so are going to do (gasp) gray and GREEN?!?!?!? b/c i looooooove that too…b/c i looooooooove that color green [this was a departure from the aforementioned gray and yellow color scheme]
FR :: green desk, white bedding, gray walls, yellow bamboo curtain-ry
FR :: i’m just worried if i do a white desk [the other color option], that will be too much white in that room!
Me :: mmhmmm….BUT
Me :: (i’m playing devil’s advocate)
FR :: please, please
Me :: if you get white, that frees you up to change things as you want to – like, do you want a $500 green desk for the next 10 years? [a moment of short-lived practicality!]
Me :: perhaps yes! i mean, it’s gor-ge-ous
FR :: HM…ok…this is a very good question
Me :: it might be more practical to get white? and versatile?
Me :: that’s what i’m here for
FR :: the OTHER option i’ve been considering
FR :: (OPTIONS)
Me :: OPTIONS! [we always joked about my endless stream of options...and how she has now caught the disease!!!]
FR :: is to get the vanity (and use as a desk) that is in the mirrored furniture set like the little table in my family room – but not the mirror, obviously!
FR :: so color versatile???
Me :: ooooooh [i am so uplifting and encouraging of other OPTIONS!]
Me :: VERY color versatile
FR :: hmm…ok…it’s a thought!
FR :: AND it’s not $500!!!
FR :: and use one of my white chairs
FR :: and then it’s not so much white??
Me :: ooh fun! cute white chairs! yeah…
Me :: OR
Me :: OR
Me :: OR
Me :: get the white desk, and find a cheap tres chic chair on CraigsList and paint it GREEN
Me :: or YELLOW
Me :: b/c you need more chairs and tables, clearly [she has a ton of cute little tables and chairs!]
FR :: more chairs and tables. always need more, yes.
Me :: the ONLY hmmmm i have is fingerprints…
FR :: oh
FR :: good point
FR :: see
FR :: and i can’t believe the boy [my husband] doesn’t understand why these decisions are so hard!
FR :: so many things to consider!
